Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology is located in Pampady, Kottayam district, Kerala State, India. It was started in 1991 with 5 courses of study, Electronics engineering, Mechanical engineering, Electrical engineering, Civil engineering, and MCA.In 1998, B.Tech in Computer Science & Engineering was also added. Though initially named Government Engineering College (GEC) Kottayam, the college was renamed Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology, in memory of the former Indian Prime Minister Mr. Rajiv Gandhi, who was assassinated just four months prior to the establishment of the college. It is affiliated to the Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, Kerala, India.

The Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology, Kottayam, is one of the few technical institutions in South India, which admits students only on the basis of merit,through an All Kerala Engineering Entrance Examinationand is one of the leadin institutes in Kerala.
